Unit 3

Part A: Reflection (8)
You must complete EACH sentence fully.

In this unit I learned that Transnational Company’s outsource jobs to developing countries.
I found it really interesting that Sweatshops employees only earn about 2$ a day.
I can connect what have learned in class to economic development because of how sweatshops benefits transnational corporations which impacts the country/continent as a whole.
What surprised me this unit was Sweatshops workers have no benefits and rights.
One concept that I am still having difficulty with is why Transnational company’s keep thing secret to the public.
One question I still have is why transnational companies don’t pay the workers in sweatshops more.
One skill or learning strategy I found helpful was The word wall If I was to teach someone how to use this I would tell them to first Write down a tittle for the subjects your doing Then every time you finish something, write words that relate to the subject or help remind you of the subject Next read over your word wall every day and add more words. This will help them remember importing concept through there studies.

Part B: Free Trade (7 marks)

Explain Free Trade in a well written paragraph that connects any of the following 7 terms: Free trade, trade barriers, World Trade Organization, tariffs, developing countries, NAFTA, developed countries, subsidy, trade liberalization, economic nationalism, protectionism.

Free Trade connects to trade barriers because with free trade it reduces the trade barriers with means more profit for transnational corporations. Free trade and developing countries, when a developing country gets a loan from the World Bank they have to do 3 things, adopt Free Market Policies, increase interest rates, and cut government spending’s.

Part C: Globalization Cartoon (5 marks)

Find a cartoon about globalization related to any concept or term we have done this unit. Paste this cartoon into your blog. Explain what term it relates to and then interpret the cartoon.
This image relates to transnational companies sweatshops, and human rights. This image relates to the Nike symbol used as a v to spell out Slavery, this show that Nike Sweatshops don’t have human rights and enslave employees. Another example is a Nike shoe stepping on a person. This shows how employees can’t escape the grip of transnational corporations.

Part D: Globalization Videos (6 marks)

Post and label two videos. One must be the positive effects of globalization and one must be the negative effects of globalization. Label each clearly so I know that this in favour or against globalization. The videos must be between 2 and 4 minutes only. Under each post, write two sentences that summarize how read the bias.
Negative.
No limit to how long you work, no breaks from working, no award wages.
Positive

Part E: Globalization and Quality of Life (4 minutes)

Watch the video that is linked on D2L.  Using the sentence starters below provide a brief summary of the video for someone logging into your blog.
·         The connection is between income per person and life expectancy is how healthy and rich they are
·         Hans Rosling is pro-globalization. I know this because in the video how the 3rd world countries are catching up
·         The most interesting thing I learned was countries are becoming Healthier as the years past
·         One things I would like to learn more about it why Africa is near the bottom is there something wrong with there economy.

Unit 1: Blog Entry

Part A: Reflection
In this unit I learned that transnational corporations, outsource jobs to countries for lower wages.
I found it really interesting that Bill 101 was created in order to preserve the Francophone linguistic identity.
I can connect what have learned in class to me as a Canadian Citizen because i assimilated my culture, and Canadian culture, and how I live in a multi-cultural and bilingual society.
What surprised me this unit was the CRTC created laws so that Canadian music is kept and heard in Canada so we don't just have American music in the radio.
One concept that I am still having difficulty with is pluralist mostly because I'm not sure what it means.
One question I still have is why do immigrants have to speak French just to immigrate into Quebec.
One skill or learning strategy I found helpful was the word wheel. If I was to teach someone how to use this I would tell them to first have 8 words in the middle Then connect the words to each other around a circle with 8 boxes next write how they would connect to each other Finally its done. This will help them remember what connects to what and if you don’t know what something might mean u can just connect them to something else.

Part B: Economic Globalization

Outsourcing is when a Company sends someone to another country to educate them to do there jobs.
Transnational companies outsource to make more profit. the advantages of this is that people in other country's learn new things and companies pay lower wages so they make more profit. Disadvantages are that your jobs are outsourced so you have no job and the people that work for these companies get little pay.

Part C: Globalization and Identity
The source is saying that they don't need the government to help them protect there language. Bill 101 is a law created by the government to encourage the Francophone linguistic identity. They passed this law so that the French language would expand.

Argument in favour of this is that the French language will be persevered and in crease the number of Francophone's. Arguments against is that immigrants have to learn French in order to immigrate into Canada when so may want to speak English.

In my opinion i agree with the statement that the government didn't have to get involved. In some ways i agree that the government should be involved because Quebec wants to separate from Canada, and Bill 101 is encouraging them to stay. This relates to globalization by linguistic identity, how the Government is trying to protect the French linguistic identity.

Reflection
In this unit I learned that Canada was colonized Canada and how the Europeans forced the first nations that lived in Canada into Residential schools to become more "civilize".

I found it really interesting that Haiti was colonized by two countries France and Spain

I can connect what have learned in class to Science biome Biomes deals with ecosystems of animals, also the land scape , this relates to imperialism and the land they discovered has different ecosystems.

What surprised me this unit was how the Europeans though they were superior to the First nations just because of there culture .

One concept that I am still having difficulty with is Residential schools because i don't really understand why the government took over the residential schools

One skill or learning strategy I found use full was the history of imperialism, learning the impact it had on society and how it has shaped us now.
Soaps is a good way to summarize a paragraph.

 Early economic globalization

Mercantilism is where European monarchs (King, and Queen) increase there wealth through international trade.

Capitalism relates to mercantilism because Capitalism caused mercantilism(private businesses) because the workers that the monarchs sent over noticed all the money they were getting so they though if they made there own they will get the money as well this caused capitalism.

Industrialization was caused by capitalism, which effected the economy in many ways some bad, some good

imperialism is when one country bigger takes over a smaller one. taking there resources, land

Impacts of imperialism

The source shows us the "white man's burden" was written by a poet, partly because of imperialism where many big nations where rushing to Africa "Scramble for Africa" the nations colonized the Africans. since they though they were Superior they were motivated to "help" them become more civilized.

Legacy of imperialism in Canada

Aboriginal people have been affected by Imperialism.Experiencing many hardships from the past, and scares that have not been mended. For example 60,000 aboriginals were separated from there family and forced into these residential schools, were they were punished for rebelling, and speaking there mothers tongue.this shows that Europeans didn't care about the feelings of the Aboriginal people. This also shows that the Europeans though the Aboriginal people where inferior to themselves.Another example is that out of the year aboriginal people weren't given love from the family, for 10 months. This shows that Aboriginal children weren't happy in this residential schools. This also show how the Europeans though they were better then them and that they had to rely on violence to get them to change there ways. Therefore many Aboriginal people were scarred, from these residential schools, and almost lost the religion.

Connection to globalization
Globalization  connects to many things like, culture, social, technology, ecological, financial, political, geographical, and , economic

To what extent has imperialism shaped the present situation in Haiti.
Currently I'm doing research on the past history of Haiti. So far I learned that 80% are Christian, and that they eat rice and beans on a daily Basie's. Most children don't live before the age of 5 due to the fact that they can't get enough supply of food because they usually buy food that is perishable.

Introductory Assignment

Part 1:
During grade 9 i learned some of globalization, mostly economic globalization. I learned how goods were manufactured, distributed, and sold, also how they were priced. I also learned many things about Canada's past history of the First First Nations, Métis and Inuit. Government we learned how to become minister and the laws, how there are 2 separate laws for adults and youth.I experienced cultural globalization when i lived in Arizona Yuma for 3 or 4 years i went to school with many Spanish people, going to school there for pre-school, kinder garden and grade 2-3.

Part 2:
My learning is good, but my participation i think its low, because i don't really ask questions during class. I've completed most on my assignments so far in social 10 -2, one i haven't completed is in the booklet- pg 9. I'm not really having much difficulty its just because i may not have enough time to complete my assignments, because of work i do after school. My two goals are, to complete all my Homework and assignments, participate more in class.

Part 3:

I think this picture represents 3 things of globalization, Ecological, financial, and Economics. Ecological, because of all the resources just to produce these products the more the demand the more we resources. Financial as the demand goes up the supply goes down and the cost goes up. Economic product maybe transported around the world selling at different prices depending on the economy.
